Should You Learn NLP?

by Michael Lovitch

You might have heard about NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and wondered whether it is something you should take a look at for yourself.

NLP is one of the most misrepresented practices I have ever come across. And to be honest, the reason I haven’t written about it over the last six years is because there is a lot to tackle!!

My NLP Background…

Being kind of a mind freak at an early age, I studied NLP under Robert Dilts and Judith Delozier (two of the four authors of NLP Volume I).

By the end of 1993, I was a “Master Practitioner.” And by 1995 I was a, “Trainer’s Trainer.” However, you will not find NLP anywhere in my biography or previously on my resume.

There is a reason for that.

Before I go into this, let me state up front that studying NLP has definitely helped me in quite a few areas of my life. It can serve as a great “gateway” to some of the great minds of the mid-20th century, and by default takes you out of your own perceptual position.

Said more simply, you start to pay attention to the way other people see the world and to social systems in a way that most people simply do not.

NLP: Science, Fiction or something in between?

First, I simply have to let you know that NLP is NOT a science. Not even close. There is no theory generation, testing, peer review, or anything to control quality. The variety in training is astronomical! And testing practitioners is basically non-existent. So, all people really have to do is pay for a certificate (kind of like hypnosis practiced by non-licensed therapists).

A lot of the initial teachings of NLP have been debunked. For example, “eye accessing cues” representing “representational systems” has been falsified. But ask almost any NLP practitioner and they will preach it as the gospel.

In fact, there really hasn’t been anything developed by NLP that has stood the test of time.

And as far as being a “persuasion machine,” NLP will not do the trick on its own. You are better off reading the persuasion literature.

But Don’t Throw Away NLP Yet…

However, NLP did bring a lot of stuff from other disciplines and made it easier to understand. It takes some work from Fritz Perls, Gregory Bateson, Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson and actually makes it accessible to regular people. This is where the value lies.

From Fritz Perls and Virginia Satir, you learn about systems and perceptual positions. This is extremely valuable in getting along with others and yourself.

From Gregory Bateson, we learn about ecological thinking. Robert Dilts does a great job of using Bateson’s logical levels in a lot of NLP techniques. This practice can really help organize your thinking.

And what NLP learned from Milton Erickson can also be helpful. This is the value of metaphor as well as “pacing and leading.” I am friends with Milton’s daughter Betty Alice. She told me that Erickson was NOT a big fan of NLP, but admits they did a decent job of modeling hypnosis structurally (although not therapeutically).

So, there is something there… Just go in with the proper expectations and your eyes wide open.

Knowing NLP Does NOT Make You a Therapist

This is my biggest pet peeve about NLP (and hypnosis, by the way). Going to 30-day course does not make you an expert in anything…especially something where testing is not taken seriously.

When I studied NLP, I simply could not believe the crazy people who were walking out of there with certificates! (Myself included – I was 23 years old and was in no position to counsel anybody).

So if you do learn NLP, do it for yourself. Don’t pretend you are somehow now qualified to deal with somebody’s deep emotional issues. You really need to get a counseling degree from a quality institution. It is irresponsible to do otherwise.

This goes for hypnosis as well. We only publish programs from practitioners with doctorates in psychology and a license to practice mental health. This is important.

Your Opportunity to Learn NLP

I have been given a lot of NLP courses to evaluate over the years. Most of the stuff has been way overpriced for what they deliver. I have finally found one that I think delivers the goods in an easy to understand way and at a very affordable price.

The irony is that the guy who created it and I couldn’t be more different in our philosophies.

He has been practicing hypnosis without any counseling experience for years, sells NLP as something you can go and make money with in just 4 weeks, and definitely leans metaphysical.

If you know me, you know I am not into anything metaphysical (not a big fan of the New Age).

But at the same time, he has created the most complete and affordable home study NLP course out there and I don’t want my personal opinions about his other work to get in the way of you giving it a try.

So, if you have always wanted to at least get a taste of NLP without breaking the bank, then I recommend you give this course a try. The only thing I ask is that even though one of the sales pitches is that you can start practicing when you are done… don’t do it.

In Conclusion

Sorry for the long post, but I really value honesty and transparency. But the long and short of it is that if you have not had real exposure to NLP, this is the best program for the money out there. Steve G. Jones is almost done with his doctorate in Education from Georgia Southern University. It shows because this course is well thought out. Just don’t go out and start doing “therapy” with a home study course!!!

And the fact that Steve and I are about as far apart as two people could be on metaphysical issues should not get in the way of you experiencing some really good content.

Acai Berry: The $100 Million Dollar Weight Loss Scam

by Michael Lovitch

Some interesting news came out last night. The attorney general of Connecticut, Richard Blumethal, announced an investigation into the business practices and questionable science associated with Acai berry products — primarily pitched by Internet-based companies as a wonder treatment for weight-loss.

Personally, I think this is great news and it is about time.

If you spend any time online, you have surely seen ads with the headlines, “Oprah’s Diet Secret”, “Seven Rules to a Flat Stomach, or (the worst) “Amy’s weight loss blog”, “Karen’s weight loss blog”, etc… on almost every page online.

If you actually clicked on one of these ads, you probably ended up on what looked like a blog with a before and after picture of some woman who has lost weight. She then tells a story about how she saw Dr. Mehmet OZ and Oprah say that acai is a miracle diet food. It might also mention Rachael Ray.

The woman then says she tried it herself and the pounds just came flying off. It is kind of believable as it looks like a real person and there are even comments on her blog. There then is a link to one of the many companies selling acai berry on a free trial basis.

Problem 1: The Blogs are Phonies

The problem here (one among many) is that these blogs are all phonies.

The woman depicted on Tara’s Diet Blog, Olivia’s Weight Loss blog, Alicia’s Diet Blog, Becky’s Weight Loss blog, and at least 75 other blogs is a German model named Julia who has nothing to do with acai or any weight-loss product. The German photographer who made the original photos of her available on Istockphoto.com said the pill companies manipulated some of the “after” images to give the impression of weight loss.

Most likely the sites are actually run by men. (That is just my guess).

Anyway, the people running the blogs are definitely a part of the problem – but they are not the cause. These are just opportunist people who saw an easy way to make a buck by promoting the biggest diet pill hoax of the 21st century.

They are not “associated” with the folks who market the pills; they just get an ungodly amount of money every time they send these people a free trial through one of these blogs.

I could go on and on about this. One consequence of these fake blogs making so much money is it squeezes out ethical marketers because the price for buying ad space simply becomes too high.

Problem 2: Acai Berry Will Not Help You Lose Weight

In truth, açai has less antixodants than concord grapes, blueberries, and black cherries. But more importantly, no credible evidence suggests antioxidants promote weight loss.

The attorney general from Connecticut says it more strongly,

“There is no competent scientific research that demonstrates any of the claimed effects of Acai berry, including weight loss, detoxification and increased energy and vitality”

Problem 3: Oprah Did NOT Endorse Acai Berry

And the truth about the Oprah show with Dr. Oz is that they never mentioned Acai as a weight loss aide, just as one of many fruits that were healthy (like tomatoes). In fact, on Oprah’s website they have a statement out that says,

“Consumers should be aware that Oprah Winfrey is not associated with nor does she endorse any açaí berry product or online solicitation of such products.”

Just to be clear, there is no acai berry supplement endorsed by Oprah, Dr. Perricone, Rachel Ray or Dr. Oz.

Problem 4: There is no Miracle Diet Pill that Works

There simply is no magic pill that is going to allow you to lose weight if you don’t eat right and exercise. There are pills that can help you lose water weight in the short term, and there are supplements that may help you control your appetite (usually stimulants) but even they are not that dramatic.

If you have a thyroid issue, hormonal issues or have a tendency towards insulin resistance, there are certain supplements that can help you move towards attaining the metabolism of a normal person your age. However, these will not help you if you already have a normal metabolism. For example, I lean hypothyroid and am helped by a very inexpensive iodine supplement recommended by Dr. Hyman.

I am as guilty as anyone in that I am always looking for the miracle pill! I take quite a few supplements, (mainly for vitality and longevity) but have pretty much given up on the weight loss benefits. I do see promise in resveratrol, not as a miracle, but as something that can help keep insulin levels in check. But again, if you don’t have your diet under control it will do you no good.

In short, if you want to get to and maintain a healthy weight - there is no magic pill that is going to do it for you!

I would love to read your comments on the acai berry scam as well as any other feedback you have. Just comment below.

You Will Never Look at Pain the Same Way Again

by Michael Lovitch

A new study, published in the November 2008 issue of the Journal, “Current Biology”* just blew my mind.

Researchers found that just by changing the way subjects looked at an achy limb, they could affect the degree of pain experienced AND the swelling of the limb.

This is pretty crazy stuff, but is just more evidence of the mind/body connection.

Here is the study in more detail:

Researchers found subjects who all experienced chronic pain in one of their arms. They then had them all do 10 hand movements that would trigger pain in the aggravated arm. The movements were such that the subject could watch their own hand movements.

They had the subjects do these movements under four different conditions:

1. With No visual Manipulation (control 1)
2. While looking through lenses that did not affect the size of their arm (control 2)
3. While looking through lenses that magnified the size of their arm
4. While looking through lenses that minimized the size of their arm

All of the subjects experienced some pain and swelling under all conditions, but the differences were significant under the different conditions, and truly amazing..

The lenses caused the subjects to see the arm as bigger experience more pain and swelling than the control groups, while the lenses that caused the subjects to see the arm as smaller causes less pain AND less swelling than the control groups.

Researchers still can’t tell us why exactly this is happening but some guesses have to do with something called the, “top-down” effect of body image on body tissues. Meaning that the experience of pain is bi-directional (works both ways) between the actual cause of the pain and the perception of the pain causing stimulus.

Another related theory from one of the study’s authors, Dr. Mosley, is that protective responses—including the experience of pain—are activated according to the brain’s implicit perception of danger level. “If it looks bigger, it looks sorer and more swollen,” Moseley said. “Therefore, the brain acts to protect it.”

Either way, I find the whole experiment fascinating. It is just one more piece of evidence of the brain’s role in how we experience pain.

More Information on the Brain’s Role in How We Experience Pain

If you are interested in knowing more about the brain’s role in how pain is experienced, we have downloadable recordings of Dr. Maggie Phillips (a world renowned expert on mind/body healing) going into great detail on the subject.

http://www.hypnosisnetwork.com/downloads/?E398Q

This is free and consists of 5 mini lectures explaining how pain works and a mini session called, “Using Mental Focus to Shift Pain” that acutally guides you through a semi-hypnotic session where you actually shift the experience of pain using your mind.

The lectures are kind of cerebral (boring to some people) but I personally think they are interesting! And if you or a loved one is experiencing pain and/or taking dangerous medications, then it is more than worth listening to.

If you enjoy the lectures and are experiencing physical pain, Dr. Phillips created a four CD audio program where you can use hypnosis and other body/mind modalities to reduce and sometimes eliminate chronic pain.

http://www.hypnosisnetwork.com/hypnosis/pain_management.php

Important: Please listen to the free interviews before making this decision. It is not a miracle solution and if you don’t find the interviews interesting, you probably will not have the patience to use the program to great effect.

If you do have the patience to actually do the sessions and learn about how pain works (this is part of the process) then it will improve the quality of your life pretty dramatically.

While we are on the subject of pain, my good friend Jesse Cannone recently wrote an article on how back pain actually shrinks the brain!

Instead of co-opting his article, I think it is only fair that I send you to his site to read it. He has a really good back pain product that deals with the physical causes of back pain and is a great guy to know.

How Pain Shrinks The Brain

Well, here is to a great December! Please comment about this article and any of the links in it. I am interested in this subject. Please refrain from overt product pitches, but I would be interested to know of any interesting solutions for pain management, whether they are nutritional or physical exercises.

Regards,

Michael Lovitch
